Review: Grrl Toyz Silk Touch Egg Vibe for Vibrator.com

21 Sep

grrltoyz

Several months ago, vibrator.com send me the Grrl Toyz Silk Touch Egg Vibe.  I then proceeded to fall off the face of the earth (or at least the world of sex toys).  Here, presented with abject apologies to the folks over at vibrator.com, is the much-delayed review.

I’ve tried a few eggs and bullets, and with the exception of the beloved Xtreme Pack, this is the bullet vibe I use most frequently. The bullet itself is about two inches long. It’s textured: you can see from the picture above that it looks a little like a honey-dipper with three bloops of equal size and a fourth smaller bloop on the tip.  This texture is pronounced enough that you can actually feel it both internally and externally. The plastic is indeed, as advertised, silky and the sea-foam green is also a pretty attractive color in person. The plastic can’t be sterilized (so keep this in mind if sharing), but it is phthalates-free (yay!).

My favorite part of logistics for this toy is, hands down, the fact that the coiled cord connecting the vibe to the controller detaches (it plugs into a socket like headphones plug into an ipod) so you can remove the vibe to wash it and not have to worry about getting water in the battery compartment.  This is key and made me very happy.

The controller has has a huge silver on/off button that’s ludicrously sensitive.  I’ve accidentally bumped it lightly a few times and turned it on unexpectedly.  Once the bullet was sitting on top of a hardback book on my bed; I reached go grab something off the bedside table, bumping the silver button in the process.  This isn’t a particularly quiet vibe to begin with, and when it started vibrating on top of the book in my otherwise silent room I was scared half to death.  I may or may not have screamed.  That said, the noise this vibe produces under normal circumstances is pretty easy to muffle with a blanket. You just have to be careful of the touchy button.

By (carefully) pushing the hair-trigger button, you cycle through steady vibrations, pulses, and then off. Below the on/off button is a little wheel that controls the intensity of the vibrations. There are five intensity settings, indicated by lights below the wheel.  For its size, this thing puts out a pretty substantial amount of power.  The cord feels pretty sturdy and the connection to the vibe seems good, but I’m still not going to insert the bullet vaginally without putting it in a condom first. Call me paranoid, but hey.

All in all, I really like this vibe.  I just sort of eye it suspiciously when the batteries are in lest it turn on at an inopportune moment and scare the crap out of me.

Review: Papaya Toys Rainbow for Shevibe.com

19 Sep

rainbow-purple

From the very first time I saw pictures of vibrators from Papaya Toys, I wanted one, bad.  The colors are bright and the designs beautiful.  Getting to see one in person and use it, however, sealed the deal.

The Rainbow is a traditional vibrator made nontraditional by the fact that there’s a slight curve to the shaft.  The one I got is purple with a turquoise ring to seal the battery compartment: a very pretty color combination, and waterproof to boot.  It has a bulbous head attached to a slightly narrower shaft with ridges down to the turquoise ring.  Below the ring is the handle, which has a grippy rubber feel and houses the battery compartment and the controls.  The pure silicone is squeezable, but the shaft has a limited amount of flexibility (presumably due to the mechanical parts inside).  You get minimal packaging and instructions in both English and German (the English is a straightforward translation of the German, happily with nothing left out or unidiomatically translated).

The motor is in the head of the Rainbow, so the vibrations are concentrated there and in the two or so inches immediately below.  The vibrations travel down the rest of the shaft but they aren’t as strong.  Here’s now the settings work:

There are two buttons.  The one on the left turns the vibrator on and cycles through the three patterns (if pushed once) and turns up the intensity of vibration (if held down), while the one on the right turns the vibrator off (if pushed once) and turns down the intensity of vibration (if held down).  It’s a pretty intuitive interface, and the buttons make this nice “click” noise when you push them.  Push the left button once and you get a steady buzz.  Push it again and you get a buzz buzz buzz pattern.  Push it a third time and you get a buzzzzzzzzzz buzz buzz buzz buzzzzzzzzzz buzz buzz buzz pattern.  Push it once more and you go back to the steady buzz.  On each of these settings you can turn the vibrations up or down from very faint to moderately intense by holding down one or the other button.  Here’s the kicker: when you turn the Rainbow on, it remembers the setting you were on when you last turned it off.  It’s pretty smart.

The Rainbow takes 2 AA batteries (my Eneloops worked fine and I assume other rechargeables will as well).  The battery compartment is also intuitive: you unscrew the base from the shaft and insert the batteries into the removable compartment.  Slide the compartment back in, screw the base back on, and voila: playtime.  The seal around the battery compartment makes it completely waterproof and submersible.

In practice, I found the Rainbow to perform quite well as what it was intended to be: a traditional vibrator.  The head is a bit too soft and the shaft a bit too flexible for great g-spot stimulation, at least for me (I tend to favor stiffer toys for that particular purpose), but for straight up penetration it felt really nice.  Once you get past the head, the ridges are big enough to be noticeable during thrusting but not big enough to be uncomfortable.  The head is big enough for all-over external stimulation, but is too large for pinpointed clit stimulation.  I happen to like the all-over buzzy-on-the-vulva type of stimulation, so it worked for me.  The Rainbow is fundamentally unpretentious: what it does, it does well, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is.   Plus, it looks awesome and stuff.

  • Humiliation on its own seems petty and mean; this I do admit. However, humiliation is the key for lust and passion when the person being humiliated secretly enjoys it. [...] Fresh uses bright pastel colors that a guy might get his girl to ease her into the idea of BDSM by showing it can be cute but still strong. In my case, when there are two guys involved, I make my boy take one for the team and work with products he never dreamed of being in.
