Editor’s Pick

  • Bloomy by Jezebelle
  • Two things stood out right away; the amazing sensation that the curves give, and that the end of the curly loop is long enough for clitoral stimulation. Although the Bloomy is short, the curves and girth of the toy make up for it!

Lack of HNT

This is the second week running I haven’t had an HNT.  I don’t really have an excuse, other than I’m having serious body-image issues at the moment.  So I think I’m taking a break from HNTs until I feel more comfortable with myself (gonna seriously try to lose some weight).  It’s really hard to hate your body, and trying to come up with HNTs I’m comfortable showing is just driving the point home for me.

Don Wands Bent Graduate

Hi everyone! I apologize for my long hiatus (real life got in the way). I’d like to talk now about the Don Wands Bent Graduate, an affordable glass toy generously sent to me by pinkcherry.com.

dscn0162

(Yes, that is an article on language evolution by Noam Chomsky that this toy was photographed on.  What?  I turned it over!)

There are many, many good things to say about this toy.  First is that, as mentioned above, it’s affordable.  You can get it from pinkcherry.com for about $35.  This is a great thing for anyone who has looked at beautiful Phallix glass toys that retail for about $200 and despaired.  The more affordable glass, the better!  And, quite frankly, it isn’t usually the case that you get what you pay for: my favorite glass toys have all been on the inexpensive side. (Plus, the Rainbow Mega Nubby, another Don Wands glass dildo, is basically the most popular glass toy ever.)

The Bent Graduate comes with a sample of Wet Platinum silicone lube and a ludicrously puffy pink case to prevent damage:

dscn0168 (It looks funny, but you’ll be glad to have the case if you ever drop it!  And  yes, I’m going to continue to degrade that fine piece of scholarship by  taking photos of sex toys on it.)

Anyway, glass is a great sex toy material.  It’s phthalates-free and body-  friendly.  The Bent Graduate is made of Pyrex glass, which means it’s  basically indestructible.  You should still check it for little chips and  cracks (and if you find any, stop using it!), but they’re unlikely to happen.    I’m sure you’ve read elsewhere the wonderful temperature retaining  properties of Pyrex glass, so I won’t go into detail here: suffice to say that  this  toy was ice cold when it first arrived and within a few minutes of  using it  was warmer than me.  Glass is awesome.

Personally, I really enjoyed pairing this toy with a small clit vibe (I  usually go for my trusty Xtreme Pack).  I like  glass toys best after I’ve  warmed up a little, maybe orgasmed once already.  My favorite part about  this dildo is that since the curve on the g-spotting end is so pronounced, I could insert it and rub my clit against the shaft.

Another great thing is that both ends of this dildo are usable.  The  drastically curved end is great for g-spotting (although the head is kind of small, so g-spot stimulation might be more challenging with this toy for those who don’t know exactly where theirs is).  The end with the bulbs also feels really nice during penetration, and the curved end makes an easy-to-hold  handle.  Neither end is particularly thick, which will be good for some people and not good for other people.  Personally, I tend to like my glass  dildos on the thinner side, since the material has no give at all.  For size  comparison purposes, here’s a side-by-side photo of the Bent Graduate  and the ever-popular Lelo Ella:

dscn0164You can see from this photo how pronounced the g-spot curve on the Bent Graduate is.

Glass is an easy material to care for: you can use all kinds of lubricants with it (oil-based lubes are not recommended for penetrative use, though).  Glass can be sterilized (Pyrex glass can be boiled, wiped down with a 10% bleach solution, or placed in the dishwasher, top rack, no soap), so this toy could be used with multiple partners or could be switched between vaginal and anal use if sterilized properly in between.

The Bent Graduate could be used as an anal toy, if you were careful: the bulbous handle is a little thicker than the rest of the toy, so it could be used safely as a base.  The curve might be really nice for prostate stimulation on a guy, just a thought.

All in all, I’d say go for it, unless you’re a size queen, in which case, this dildo is probably not for you.  But otherwise, I’d say it’d be a great addition to the collection of glass afficionados everywhere.  Head over to pinkcherry.com and check it out!

TMI Tuesday

1) What is your favorite charity? Do you give your time or just money to that charity?

My top two favorite charities are Bike and Build and Habitat for Humanity.  Bike and Build is like a twofer because it raises funds to support affordable housing charities like Habitat.  I did a Bike and Build trip this past summer (raised $4000 for affordable housing and then biked cross-country raising awareness/stopping every week to build at a build site in whatever town we happened to be in).  I’m thinking about doing another trip in the summer of 2010, but until then I donate.  It’s hard to get to the closest Habitat site to me, so I don’t make it out there as often as I’d like.

2) Describe your bed.  What side do you sleep on?

I sleep on a full-size platform bed (the wood has a cherry finish) with a cheap yet awesome memory foam mattress I got from overstock.com.  I sleep on the right side (if you’re lying on the bed), because that’s the side my bedside table (and hence my water bottle is on).

3) How important is a partner’s kissing ability?

Well, considering it’s how I gauge if the physical stuff is going any further, pretty damn important!

4) Have you ever “taken advantage” of a person under the influence of alcohol?  Have you ever been “taken advantage of” while under the influence of alcohol?

I have never taken advantage of anyone who had been drinking.  I have been taken advantage of while I was intoxicated, but I’d rather not talk about it.

5) Have you ever tried to replay the famous scene from From Here to Eternity?  How was it?

Well, I had to google this movie, and the sex scene appears to be on a beach: HELL NO.

Bonus (as in optional): What kind of birth control do you use?

Nuvaring!  It’s awesome.  I’ve been on like, 7 different formulations of birth control, all of which made me bleed CONSTANTLY.  I don’t have this problem on Nuvaring as long as I take it continuously (no breaks in between rings).

Whoooo!

united_states_one_dollar_bill_obverse

I just got paid.  What’s the first thing I do?  Buy some new toys!  I also finally bought an Eneloop rechargeable battery set, which I’m ridiculously excited about.

I know I’ve been kind of silent these past few days; I’ve been overwhelmed with grading (my class is up to 120 and I’m the only TA).  But there will be new reviews coming soon, I promise!

Bad Vibes!!!

catt

I just found this, via Erin Leone. It’s called the Coalition Against Toxic Toys, or CATT.  This is a fantastic resource for learning about and avoiding unsafe toy materials. The site is affiliated with Smitten Kitten and provides lots of resources, so I suggest you check both out!

Community Issues

Oh the heels of the publication of the 2008 Best Sex Toy Reviewers (on which I was flattered to find myself listed!), there were a few posts around the community lamenting the plethora of reviews and the perceived lack of “real” sex blogging.  These posts were pretty offensive, in my opinion, since they failed to account for diversity of preferences and drive within the community.  The “fact” that there are too many sex toy reviews is treated as a foregone conclusion we must agree with.  I don’t.

The value of the sex toy community to sex toy retailers has also been ludicrously overestimated.  Sure, it’s some free advertising, but I’d be willing to bet a moderate-to-large amount of money that the revenue these sex toy retailers see come in from sex blogs is but a tiny, tiny percentage of their overall revenue.  We’re not that profitable, so we should probably get over ourselves.  Is it good to only review for safe, sex-positive, feminist retailers?  Absolutely.  As a community, we should definitely be voting with our feet (or credit cards) on that issue: but let’s not pretend it’s going to make a huge difference or drive the somehow undesirable companies out of business.

I started this blog so that I could have a venue to separate the good parts of sex from the bad parts of sex (my ex) after a horrible abusive relationship that has already cost me years of happiness and will take more before I’m well again.  I started this blog with the intent to review toys, exclusively.  I find real sex triggering.  Does it follow that I’m less of a sex blogger because I don’t write about actual sex?  Or that I don’t blog about my personal life?  I’d like to think not.  But it’s the height of hubris for someone else to assume that they know what’s best for me to be writing about on my own blog.  If you want to write more about sexuality, go ahead.  There’s no reason that anyone else should have to just because you think it’s better.  Communities are diverse places, and trying to get everyone to do the same thing strangles them.

But anyway, I’m not going to be able to say it better than Epiphora already has, so head on over to her place and check it out.  Sex toy reviewers: keep on reviewing, and ignore people who think they somehow know better than you what should go on YOUR blog.  On the flip side: don’t like what someone else does with their blog?  Don’t call them “less”, just do something different.  End of story.
